gift ideas
by Tom Thekan/The Scugog Standard
We’re coming down to the home stretch before Christmas and if you’re at a complete loss as what to get the fitness enthusiast/athlete on your list, here are some suggestions.
1. ‘The Big Book of Exercises’ by Women’s Health Magazine or ‘The Big Book of Exercises’ by Men’s Health Magazine, for the guys. These are probably the two best workout books currently in print. They boast more than 600 exercises, applicable to all levels of ability, from the beginner to the hard-core athlete. The description of the exercises is detailed and accurate and the models in the photos use excellent technique. This is a gift that will keep giving for years to come.
2. Weighted vest. Looks like the body armour worn by police but it has pockets that allow you to add weight. Uses for the vest are limited only by one’s imagination and creativity.
3. Adjustable dumbbells. Even if someone is an avid gym rat, there are those times when they can’t get in for a workout. Adjustable dumbbells - from five to 50 pounds - store easily under a bed and are great for a quick home workout.
4. Kettlebells. For a female, 20 to 24 pounds is a good starting weight. Thirty to 32 pounds for the guys. People get addicted to these. They’re fun. Warning: Does NOT make a good stocking stuffer.
5. Ab wheel. If you want strong abs, this is the ticket, but it’s a killer. Watching noobies doing face plants provides lots of laughter on Christmas Day.
6. Hoodie. In Canada it’s impossible to own too many hoodies. Look for a good quality one with fleece lining.
7. Windbreaker and wind pants. Combine a good hoodie with a wind suit and you should be good to go even at -20 degrees Celsius. No need to stay indoors this winter. Look for a suit that has reflective stripes, especially on the arms and legs. They can be life savers.
8. Foam roller. These things feel so damn good, they shouldn’t be legal. Everyone will want to use it.
Stocking stuffers...
9. Vitamin C and vitamin D3. A bottle of each is still cheaper than a trip to Florida.
10. Almonds, walnuts, pistachios. Healthy snacks with loads of anti-oxidants.
11. Chocolate. Gotta be 90 per cent cocoa.
Remember: drive carefully, Google is your friend and RELAX.
