HIGH PERFORMANCE
The top story
of 2011
by Tom Thekan/The Scugog Standard
In my opinion the top story of 2011 was not the Packers winning the Super Bowl or the Leafs not winning the Stanely Cup – again.
mOn May 18, there was a press release from the University of Alberta, stating that researchers there had discovered a cure for cancer.
mFor years the University of Toronto and Queens University have always been rated as the leading medical school in the country, so this announcement from the University of Alberta was quite unexpected and didn’t get much media coverage – which is probably why you weren’t even aware of it.
mSeveral decades ago, Dr. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize, not just once, but TWICE, withhis work, which was based on his paper ‘The Prime Cause and Prevention of Cancer’.
mIn a nutshell, Dr. Warburg claimed that cancer cells were damaged cells, that had switched from aerobic (with oxygen) respiration to anerobic (without oxygen) respiration, a more primitive form of existence in order to survive.
mAnerobically, the cancer cells used the fermentation of glucose (sugar) to survive and reproduce.
mThe researchers at U of A used the basis of Dr. Warburg’s work as a starting point and found a way to reverse the respiration of cancerous cells from anerobic back to aerobic, thereby killing off the cancerous cells.
mThese researchers found that the right application of DCA (Dichloride Acetate) to the cancerous cells would cause the cancer cells to revert back to aerobic respiration and basically self destruct.
mThe really amazing part of this story is that this small group of dedicated researchers went out and solicited their own funding for this research, because DCA is a generic drug from which no one is going to make a whole lot of money. It comes down to R.O.I. (return on investment).
mIt would seem that from all the yellow daffodils and pink ribbons sold and the millions of miles run, walked and paddled, all in the name of ‘cancer research’ – that some of this money could get to where the work is actually being done.
mCancer can be beat!
