A large crowd gathered at the CE Room of the United Church for the open house on Saturday to celebrate Eileen McLaughlin’s 80th birthday. Let’s hope for many sunny days now that the farmers are busy with their combining efforts. Damp humid days are not at all helpful.

Sunderland NewsOur community came out last Saturday to support our new playground and everyone had - as the young ones say - a ‘blast.’ About $4,000 was raised toward the $70,000 that is needed, making the goal (with other contributions factored in) now around $36,000. Good work all you volunteers!

The word ‘community’ is derived from the Old French communité, which itself is derived from the Latin cummunitas - ‘cum’ (with/together) + ‘munus’ (gift), a broad term for fellowship or organized society.

Most of us have had the Malcolm and Koots families on our minds this week, as we all mourn the loss of Laura. When we think of community, we think of families like these, who have given so much. Laura was very involved with family and friends. She was a teacher, an athlete and a coach and she and her family have given so much to our community. We all grieve with them and want them to know they have made a difference. Laura was a gift to us.
