Local marina is upping the eats!
by Blake Wolfe/The Scugog Standard
Those looking for a little Southern hospitality in Scugog would do well to venture down to the Port Perry Marina, where some new items with a little Floridian flair are appearing on the menu.
_Chef Jonnna Woodard, who took over the newly-named Marina Café at the local facility last summer, has introduced some southern and Caribbean dishes as daily specials, while keeping many of the old menu favourites on hand for customers both new and familiar. A native of Tampa, Florida (she’s even incorporated a reference to the Buccaneers, her hometown NFL squad, on the menu), with many years of kitchen experience, Ms. Woodard took over for former restaurant owners Al Fulford and Deb Storms, both of whom retired from the Boardwalk Café (as it was previously known) last year.
_“When Deb and Al retired, I was working at another restaurant here in Port Perry,” recalled Ms. Woodard. “John (Mackey, Port Perry Marina operator) then asked me if was I interested in running the Boardwalk Café, and here I am.”
_The new items include Southern specialities like fish or chicken on a bun, biscuits and gravy, hush puppies (deep fried corn fritters), as well as Ms. Woodard’s fresh-made soups. In keeping with her pledge to keep the menu as free of processed foods as possible, anglers can also bring in their catch of the day and have it prepared in the kitchen.
_“We’re not serving any processed foods,” she said. “If you order a chicken on a bun, you’ll get a real piece of chicken.”
_With family in both Scugog and Indiana, Ms. Woodard is no stranger to winter, but even after three years in Port Perry, the temperature still gets to her some days.
_“It’s cold!” she exclaimed. “Much colder than we’re used to in Tampa.”
_Ice-fisherfolk can even place an order at the restaurant and have it delivered right to the door of their hut, a new service that Ms. Woodard said is already a hit on the lake.
_In addition to her work at the Port Perry Marina, Ms. Woodard also works as a chef for private functions.
_The Marina Café is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday.
