21st annual Easter Egg Hunt
by Tracey Coveart/The Scugog Standard

‘In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it,
You’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade.’
Irving Berlin

If composer Irving Berlin was alive today he would be proud of Port Perry for holding its first ever Easter Bonnet Parade and Contest on Sunday, April, 4 at noon on Queen St.

The parade and contest, presented by the Port Perry United Church CCU in conjunction with The Nutty Chocolatier/Scugog Standard Annual Easter Egg Hunt is sponsored by Vos’ Independent Grocer and prominent local figures will judge bonnets in the following categories:
-Most Traditional (under 12 years)
-Most Traditional (over 12 years)
-Most Original (under 12 years)
-Most Original (over 12 years)
-Most Likely to Cause a Traffic Accident (under 12 years)
-Most Likely to Cause a Traffic Accident (over 12 years)
-Best Bloomin’ Hat
-Most Delicious Hat
-Best Baseball Cap
-Best Helmet (hockey, ski, bicycle, equestrian, etc.)

Look for the ‘chicks’ with their baskets to make your donation to the Scugog Memorial Public Library’s expansion project (money will help to improve the children’s and teen area). To get kids in the ‘spring’ of things, The CCU is sending flyers home with public school students encouraging them to pay a dollar for the privilege of wearing their crazy hat to school on the Thursday before Easter weekend (April 1), with proceeds going to the library.

Terry and Christine Vos of Vos’ Independent Grocer are also working exclusively with your community newspaper to make Easter extra special this year. They have filled two gigantic prize baskets with Easter goodies that will be awarded to the winners of The Scugog Standard/Vos’ Independent Grocer Easter Egg Colouring Contest.

Kids are invited to colour the egg in the newspaper over the next two weeks and drop off their entries at The Standard office at 94A Water St., or Vos’ Independent. Winners will be selected by random draw on Monday, March 29, at 5 p.m. All entries will then be exhibited at Vos,’ so kids can come to the store and see their artwork on display.

The 21st Annual Easter Egg hunt in downtown Port Perry - a popular free event for kids ages three to seven - will follow the Easter Bonnet Parade and Contest on Sunday, April 4. Queen St. will be closed to vehicular traffic and kids - divided into groups according to their age - will search for colourful rocks they can exchange for Easter treats courtesy of The Nutty Chocolatier.

This annual tradition is the official kick-off to spring in Scugog Township and hundreds of spectators line Queen St. Street every year just to see the joy on the faces of a sea of children anticipating chocolate goodies from their giant friend, the Easter Bunny.
